 FEATURE SPECIAL:
Electronica Echoes

Echoes may be the ultimate chillout show, but we sometimes head a bit into the electronica zone. Here are some of our favorite electronica artists, talking about their music and the art of the mix.

THE ORB
Ambient Psychedelic Marauders
(1993)

More than a decade ago, The Orb primed listeners with a new psychedelic music born from the ethos of punk. They've captured a cult following with psychedelic mutations such as "Little Fluffy Clouds" and their 40 minute single, "Blue Room," which mixed samples and synthesizers, along with artists like Steve Hillage and Robert Fripp. In 1993, we spoke with this unlikely duo in a London studio where they were mixing their latest concoction.

In his home in the west of England in 2002, we visited Toby Marks, better known by his recording persona, Banco de Gaia. Toby Marks has always eschewed the term "ethno-techno", a genre that he helped spawn despite his ambivalence. Banco de Gaia launched a fusion of global music elements welded to kinetic rhythms and electro-sync grooves that even a decade later, holds up to extended listening. His 1995 album, LAST TRAIN TO LHASA is a signpost of ambient and techno music, and a collection of his music BANCO DE GAIA: 10 YEARS was issued three years ago. Toby Marks took us back to the birth of Banco de Gaia in Birmingham's Mega Dog and Whirly-gig raves up to the present.

BRIAN ENO
Ambient Vocals
(2005)

Brian Eno

Brian Eno (L) with Echoes host John Diliberto

Although Brian Eno is esteemed as the Godfather of ambient music, he began by crafting witty, knotty and idiosyncratic songs, first with Roxy Music and then on solo albums like HERE COME THE WARM JETS and TAKING TIGER MOUNTAIN BY STRATEGY. Those CDs have been recently re-issued, but this year Eno also put out a brand new recording of songs, his first in over 15 years. It's called ANOTHER DAY ON EARTH and it's an excursion into profound melancholy, tinged with Eno's whimsy. Earlier this year, we spoke with Eno about his return to singing.

Future Sound of London

FUTURE SOUND OF LONDON'S TECHNICOLOR DREAMS
(2002)

In their London studio in 2002, Gary Cobain of the Future Sound of London took us inside the psychedelic landscape of their album, THE ISNESS.

The spirits of Syd Barrett-era Pink Floyd, Revolver-era Beatles and the pastoral sounds of Donovan inhabit THE ISNESS like mischievous ghosts. Beatlesque harmonies, sitars, Mellotron flutes and phase-shifted vocals permeate the album in a flow from surreal sound collages.

Formerly one of the more cynical among London's ambient house music scene, FSOL member Gary Cobain has found the light of spirituality and hears it reflected in 60s psychedelia. He rummaged through his record collection and unlocks the grooves of THE ISNESS.

 AIR
Retro-Futurist Sex and Sound
(2004)

Air
Air is the innovative French band who came to renown in 1998 with their album Moon Safari. In 2004, they released their third full-length CD, TALKIE WALKIE, which explored themes of love and moods of retro-futurism. We talked with Nicholas Godin and Jean-Benoit Dunckel about their nostalgic look at love and creating scores for films like LOST IN TRANSLATION.

JUNO REACTOR
Music Magic Matrix
(2005)

Juno Reactor is a techno-ambient collective centered on Ben Watkins. He began as a more conventional techno-composer but has expanded his sound considerably to include flamenco guitars, Latin chants and heavy metal thunder.

In recent years he's composed music for the Matrix films and earlier this year he released the Juno Reactor CD, LABYRINTH. Ben Watkins talks about his own music matrix.

JAIRAMJI
Jammin' with Jairamji
(2003)

Jairamji

Jairamji is the name taken by English musician Charlie Roscoe to release his ethno-ambient soundscapes. He merged eastern tonalities, Native American flute and finger-picking guitar styles along with rhythm loops and computer samples on his debut CD, KINDRED SPIRITS. In the countryside of western England two years ago, Jairamji and his partner, flute player Andreas Kornevall talked about music that begins on acoustic guitar and flute and ends in virtual space.

Mystical Sun

MYSTICAL SUN
Ambient Light
(2004)

Mystical Sun is the recording moniker of a San Francisco Bay Area laptop composer and musician who has been quietly articulating a deeply chilled brand of ambient music, much of which he says is inspired by the low mountains surrounding his home.

His CD PRIMORDIAL ATMOSPHERES is ten years old, but he's been leaking out ambient gems on collections like AMBIENISM VOLUME ONE and 13th MOON. Last year, we headed up to Mt. Diablo with Mystical Sun.
