Ambient Chamber Music
This month, we're listening to a collection of Living Room Concerts of chamber music. Not from the classical repertoire, rather, musicians who explore the dreamy, contemplative side of modern music, like Ketil Bjornstad and David Darling (whom John Diliberto likes to call "The Lord of Largo"), or a very modern take, like Bang on a Can. These performances all hail from the nineties, and are standing the test of time very well. Hope you enjoy them!

TIM STORY & HANS-JOACHIM ROEDELIUS
(1999)
|
Tim Story is a minor legend in the world of ambient chamber music. He's been recording albums since the early 1980s with releases on the Windham Hill and Hearts of Space labels including GLASS GREEN and THE PERFECT FLAW. Tim's music is noted for its haunting melodies and arrangements that merge orchestral instruments with synthesizer ambiences.
Hans-Joachim Roedelius is known as one half of the German duo Cluster and for dozens of solo recordings released in the last 3 decades. In 1999, these two artists got together in the Echoes Living Room, playing ambient duets and trios with violist Jovanina Pagano.

David Darling is the renowned cellist who played with the Paul Winter Consort for years before striking out on his own with several recordings on the ECM label. Ketil Bjornstad is a Norwegian pianist with dozens of recordings.
In the summer of 2000, these musicians got together in the Echoes Living Room to explore slow motion largos and dusky improvisations, drawing from their album of duets, EPIGRAPHS.

MICHAEL HOPPE & TIM WHEATER
(1997)
Michael Hoppe |
Tim Wheater |
|
In the artfully appointed Los Angeles living room of Michael Hoppe, we hear a chamber performance for keyboards and Native flutes. Hoppe and Tim Wheater have collaborated for several years, releasing albums like THE YEARNING, inspired by the photo portraiture of Hoppe's grandfather. On their 1997 CD, WIND SONGS, they play intuitive duets and that's where Echoes captured these two musicians in an intimate live performance that same year.

KEVIN KELLER
(1996)
|
Ten years ago, Kevin Keller turned his Bay Area living room into a post-modern recital parlor as he played the ambient chamber music of his album, INTERMEZZO. Kevin played synthesizer landscapes, orchestrating an array of softly caressing sounds that wrapped around the acoustic cello of Eric Stein.
