Jamshied Sharifi
Persian Fusion in a New York Apartment
Jamshied Sharifi has released two perfectly honed albums in ten years, A Prayer for the Soul of Layla in 1997 and 2008's One (read a review). They both merged vocal traditions from around the world with lush, pan-global instrumentation. Balmorhea
Ambient chamber music from the Americana heartland
Balmorhea is a town and a state park in Texas, and it's the inspiration behind a quartet of the same name. They've taken the dictum, "quiet is the new loud" to heart in a soft melodic brand of instrumental rock with piano, classical strings, acoustic guitars and the occasional banjo and Telecaster. They've released critically acclaimed albums including their latest CD, Rivers Arms. Balmorhea comes into the Echoes Living Room to play live.

Ludovico Einaudi
Modern music for solo piano

In the world of ambient chamber music, Ludovico Einaudi is becoming a major figure, cited by young bands like Balmorhea. The Italian composer is part Arvo Pärt and part George Winston, mixing fragile arrangements and electronic loops around his evocative piano melodies. We catch Ludovico Einaudi in an intimate solo set just for Echoes.

Tom Rothrock
Ghost Trails & Ambient Americana
|
We jump into deep ambient Americana in a July 4th soundscape centered by an Echoes Living Room Concert with Tom Rothrock. The producer of Beck and James Blunt, Rothrock delves into ambient Americana chamber music in this exclusive performance of music from his album, Resonator. Playing dobro and guitar, Rothrock gathers an ensemble in his Los Angeles living room that includes a string quartet and French horn. They tap into a unique Americana strain of music haunted by atmosphere. Surrounding Tom Rothrock's performance will be a sound that delves into the mythical side of America with ghost trails and ambient Americana.

Ulrich Schnauss
Knob twisting chill out music live
Ulrich Schnauss is one of the signature names of chill out music.
His album, A Strangely Isolated Place codified a psychedelic brand of electronica, informed by bands like The Cocteau Twins and My Bloody Valentine. Ulrich comes into the Echoes Living Room and provides new renditions of songs from the hallucinogenic free fall of his third album, Goodbye.

Jami Sieber
Plugged in Cello
|
Jami Sieber's electric cello looks like a stick, but it sounds like a small symphony when she wires it up an starts layering her looping melodies. On the next Echoes she plays solo versions of music from her album Unspoken (Our May 2008 CD of the Month selection), but they don't sound solo at all. Jami Sieber plugs in for a set of ambient chamber music on Echoes.
