CARTER BURWELL: DEEP INSIDE THE UNDERSCORE
Carter Burwell, film composer of ADAPTATION and films by the Coen Brothers, is part of a new generation of soundtrack artists that includes Thomas Newman, Hans Zimmer and Reinhold Heil & Johnny Klimek. These composers are as likely to use electric guitar as a string section and you'll find them banging on Balinese gongs as much as timpani. Carter Burwell has been slowly rising through the film ranks since he composed the score to Joel and Ethan Coens' film, BLOOD SIMPLE. Since then, he's scored all their movies as well as THE ROOKIE, CONSPIRACY THEORY and WAYNE'S WORLD II. His score for Spike Jonze's ADAPTATION (Astralwerks/Emd) is an unusual merging of orchestra with ambient atmospheres and Balinese gamelan. Burwell talks about the psychological underscore of soundtrack composing.
