FEATURES FOR THE WEEK

Monday 1/14/02
BRUCE KAPHAN: SLIPPING AND SLIDING
Bruce Kaphan plays the pedal steel guitar, but you won't hear him putting licks on Nashville country & western records. Instead, he's been playing with rock groups like American Music Club, REM and Sting. On his solo debut, SLIDER (Hearts of Space), he creates the definitive ambient pedal steel guitar album exploiting the instruments penchant for singing sustains and mournful bends. We journey to Bruce Kaphan's studio where he slides us through his pedal steel odyssey.

Tuesday 1/15/02
WILL ACKERMAN-PLAYING GUITAR AND HEARING VOICES
Will Ackerman built his career as a solo acoustic guitarist, founding Windham Hill Records 25 years ago and launching the acoustic guitar renaissance of the 1980s and 90s. On his new album, HEARING VOICES (Windham Hill), he uses his plaintive guitar melodies to underpin exotic and ethereal voices from singers including Happy Rhodes, Heather Rankin, and Samite. Singing in Native tongues, imaginary dialects and occasionally English, HEARING VOICES has a hymn-like quality. Will Ackerman reveals the voices in his head.

Wednesday 1/16/02
CAROL TATUM-AN ANGEL ALONE
Carol Tatum wears the squadron leader's wings in the ANGELS OF VENICE, the southern California, global chamber music ensemble. Recently, she took a solo flight, recording MUSIC FOR HARP (Trine) with just herself on Celtic harp and lush synthesizer arrangements. It's another side to Tatum, highlighting her early music influences as well as nodding to her days as a heavy metal guitarist. She turns Metallica's NOTHING ELSE MATTERS into a pastoral reverie. In her San Fernando Valley home, Carol Tatum talks about her solo flight.

Thursday 1/17/02
LUMIN: LUMINATED TRANCE
In Oakland Hills in northern California, we enter the living room of Jeffrey Stott and get transported into another world where Bulgarian chants, middle eastern strings and global percussive grooves converge. Jeffrey's group is Lumin. Oud and yali-tambor player Jeffrey Stott, computer programmer Michael Emenau and singer Irina Mikhailova talk about their world fusion and affinity for global rave heard on their new CD, HADRA (Lumin Music).

Friday 1/18/02
FLORIAN FRICKE-IN MEMORY OF POPOL VUH

If you've ever seen a film by German director Werner Herzog, then you've been enchanted by the music of Popol Vuh. "Aguirre, the Wrath of God," "Fitzcaraldo," "Nosferatu," and "Hearts of Glass," are among the films that garnered much of their atmosphere from the haunting scores composed by Popol Vuh founder and pianist, Florian Fricke. On December 29th, at the age of 57, Florian Fricke died following a stroke. Taking their name from the Mayan book of the dead, Popol Vuh was a German progressive rock group that recorded dozens of albums from 1969 until the present. Beginning as a space-rock synthesizer band, Fricke sold his Moog after their second album and began exploring a more pastoral sound with acoustic piano, electric guitar, exotic singers and Eastern overtones. Echoes remembers the music of Popol Vuh and Florian Fricke in a one hour special.
