FEATURES FOR THE WEEK

Tuesday 01/29/02
A LIVING ROOM CONCERT WITH RALPH TOWNER
Mention the name Ralph Towner to any acoustic guitarist and jaws drop, and a look of reverent awe passes over their eyes. A founding member of Oregon, Ralph Towner's virtuosic mixture of jazz and classical techniques and a compositional verve that has yielded classics like "Icarus" have made him an icon of the acoustic guitar. On the heals of a new album called ANTHEM (ECM), Ralph Towner comes to the Echoes living room to play live.

Wednesday 01/30/02
LISA LYNNE HARPING FOR HEARTS
Celtic harpist Lisa Lynne has released several albums, including CDs on the Windham Hill label and her latest, MAIDEN'S PRAYER (New Earth). In her southern California home, Lisa tells the story behind her new album, which fuses her Celtic themes with a Persian group, The Lian Ensemble. She also talks about Harps for Hearts, where she performs at children's hospitals, women's shelters and recovery centers, often leaving behind a gift of a small Celtic harp.

Thursday 01/31/02
FREE SYSTEM PROJEKT'S SPONTANEOUS CREATIONS
Free System Projekt is a Dutch trio headed up by Marcel Engels that harkens back to the days of Tangerine Dream, circa 1975. Working with vintage analog synthesizer sounds, Free System Projekt improvises all their music, composing it on the spot in spontaneous performances that can be heard on their album, POINTLESS REMINDER (Quantum). We gather the trio together to talk about their space music excursions and creating music on the fly.

Friday 02/01/02
A LIVING ROOM CONCERT WITH LUMIN
In Oakland Hills in northern California, we enter the living room of Jeffrey Stott and get transported into another world where Bulgarian chants, middle eastern strings and global percussive grooves converge. Jeffrey's group is Lumin. Oud and yali-tambor player Jeffrey Stott, computer programmer Michael Emenau and singer Irina Mikhailova are joined by violin, doudouk and percussion players, who groove into the rhythms and ecstatic melodies of their new CD, HADRA (Lumin Music).
