FEATURES FOR THE WEEK

ROBERT RICH: NOTES FROM THE BESTIARY
Robert Rich is a musician of many modes, most of them pushed to the edge. We recorded him in a solo piano concert this past spring, but his latest album is his most purely electronic disc in 20 years. It's called BESTIARY and it's a smoldering, morphing expanse of analog synthesizer textures and subsonic grooves. In his Silicon Valley studio, Robert Rich unleashes some of his beasts.

Wednesday 02/06/02
SAMITE'S AFRICAN AFFIRMATIONS
Samite is a Ugandan refugee who's been living in the U.S. for over a decade. But his music has always been born of Uganda with a serene voice, haunting melodies and instruments like the kalimba. Samite recently released KAMBU ANGELS, an album of minimalist African hymns featuring Samite's serene voice, kalimba and flutes. Samite talks about his return to Africa after ten years of exile and the music it spawned.

Thursday 02/07/02
MARS LASAR: SAMPLED SOUNDSCAPES
Mars Lasar started out as a Keith Emerson inspired keyboardist from Australia. He's played on recordings by Seal and Herbie Hancock, and on countless soundtracks and commercials, but in recent years he's become a composer whose music is more about sound design than keyboard technique. On his latest album, KARMA (Paras) Lasar creates a global soundscape, drawing on instruments from Africa to Bali, all at the touch of a computer keyboard. In his studio in Los Angeles, we sample Mars Lasar's life journey.

Friday 02/08/02
A JOURNEY TO WAVE WORLD
Wave World is an imaginary planet populated by alien beings that spew pods and fly with their tendrils trailing. It's also a Dutch synthesizer group working in post-space music sound designs and incorporating Theremin and electronic wind instruments. A collaboration of computer graphics and electronic music, we talk to Wave World who give us a roadmap to their planet and music.
