FEATURES FOR THE WEEK

Tuesday 02/12/02
A LIVING ROOM CONCERT WITH DAVID DARLING
A veteran of the Paul Winter Consort, David Darling's latest CD is the Grammy nominated CELLO BLUE (Hearts of Space). He comes into the Echoes living room with his cello and some ambient noise to orchestrate his elegiac, slow motion largos. Following the words of his ECM producer, Manfred Eicher, David Darling goes "as deep as you can go" in this live performance.

Wednesday 02/13/02
HANS ZIMMER-A MUSIC WAR ROOM FOR BLACK HAWK DOWN
At his Media Venture studios, film composer Hans Zimmer takes us to the heart of a sonic Mogadishu when he talks about his score to BLACK HAWK DOWN (Decca). Zimmer, who won an Academy Award for his score to The Lion King, turns his pen to darker themes for this harrowing film. To capture the mood of clashing cultures and technologies, he created a War Room in his studio, complete with camouflage netting and battle debris. In this setting, his Black Hawk Down Band, including guitarist Michael Brook and electric cellist Martin Tillman, wove Moroccan gibris and feedback guitar together into a halluncinatory landscape.

Thursday 02/14/02
ECHOES OF THE HEART
Echoes celebrates St. Valentine's Day with a sensual soundscape of atmospheric moods and poetic murmurs. We'll hear evocations of love from the country that brought us the Kama Sutra and some deep ambient trances of the heart.

Friday 02/15/02
RASA KRISHNA TEMPLE
Thirty years ago, the Beatles George Harrison produced an album of Vedic chants and hymns called the Rada Krishna Temple which spawned the FM hit, "Govindam." That is the inspiration for the San Francisco duo Rasa, which adapts Indian hymns and devotional songs and turns them into global fusion trances. In their Marin County studio, Rasa's Kim Waters and Hans Christian talk about the sources of their new album, UNION (Hearts of Space) and answer the question, "Can white people chant?"
