FEATURES FOR THE WEEK

Monday March 5, 2001
JEFF JOHNSON & BRIAN DUNNING'S ROUTES TO BYZANTIUM
Keyboardist Jeff Johnson and flutist Brian Dunning have released a string of albums with inspiration drawn from the novels of Stephen Lawhead and inflections derived form Ireland. Their latest CD, BYZANTIUM (Ark) follows still another Lawhead novel of the same name, as Johnson & Dunning provide the soundtrack for a monk on a journey. We'll follow his route with Jeff Johnson and Brian Dunning.

Tuesday March 4, 2001
VIDNA OBMANA-FUJARA ILLUSIONS
Vidna Obmana is Belgian ambient composer Dirk Serries. A disciple of Steve Roach, Vidna Obmana works his own techno-tribal designs mixing synthesizers with organic instruments including the Eastern European fujara flute. Vidna Obmana comes by to play his flute and talk about his music, including his latest CD THE SURREAL SANCTUARY (Hypnos).

A LIVING ROOM CONCERT WITH HABIB KHAN
Habib Khan comes from a long line of Indian sitar players, but he's taken his sitar to San Jose where he's fallen in with a host of San Francisco Bay Area world fusionists. There's he mixes his sitar in with guitarists, keyboard players and violinists in an Indian fusion that's heard on his latest album LONGING (X-Dot 25). In the living room of his fairly anonymous San Jose tract home, Habib Khan opens up a world of exotic sound performing with a six piece ensemble.

PAUL WINTER & ARTO TUNCBOYACIYAN
Paul Winter and Arto Tuncboyaciyan have been an inseparable pair in the last few years. So inseparable that their two new solo albums are virtually interchangeable. Paul Winter is the heralded pioneer of world chamber music while Arto is an Armenian multi-instrumentalist whose been heard with Night Ark and Al Di Meola's World Sinfonia. Their new albums, Winter's JOURNEY WITH THE SUN and Tuncboyaciyan's EVERY DAY IS A NEW LIFE explore a world where Armenian tradition meets western fusion. We talk to these musicians about worlds coming together.
