IVAN ISHTANOVICH- THE BIRTH OF A NEW INSTRUMENT
We discover a musical device that has shaped much of the music you hear on Echoes, only it's just now coming to light. Musicians as diverse as Windham Hill Records founder Will Ackerman to ambient pioneer Brian Eno have apparently been using it for years. For lesser known musicians, like Robert Rich, it's been the answer to their prayers. "This is an instrument
that I've dreamed about, a device that can endlessly morph sound," says the Californian based synthesist. Robert Rich is only one among dozens of musicians employing the Istanomorph. We'll hear from the Russian inventor of this instrument as well as some of its most vocal proponents, including Brian Eno and Will Ackerman.

RICK COX'S GUITAR MUTATIONS
In his Los Angeles home, guitarist Rick Cox plays his guitar with maracas and a sponge, revealing the audio alchemy of his mutant guitar playing. Cox is a veteran musician who has appeared on dozens of film scores, including just about everything by soundtrack composer Thomas Newman. Noted for his ability to create rich atmospheres, unusual sounds and angular melodies, Cox has also been a fixture on the Southern California avant-garde scene, recording on the Cold Blue label. Last year he released the solo album, MARIA FALLING AWAY (Cold Blue) which The Wire said had "prettiness with a tough core." A musician whose personality is as wild as his music, Rick Cox takes us on a ride.

A LIVING ROOM CONCERT WITH RICHARD SEARLES
In his living room north of Los Angeles, guitarist Richard Searles plays live. Richard Searles has been mixing his classical guitar technique with Renaissance themes and fantasy images since the mid-1980s. His latest album, THE GREEN MAN (Earthquest) is a lush, chamber music work of original compositions and classical and Celtic themes. Playing with Ron Wagner on tabla and Patricia Mabee on harpsichord, Richard Searles weaves the fanciful melodies of his music live on Echoes.

SAMITE'S AFRICAN AFFIRMATIONS
Samite is a Ugandan refugee who's been living in the U.S. for over a decade. But his music has always been born of Uganda with a serene voice, haunting melodies and instruments like the kalimba. Samite recently released KAMBU ANGELS, an album of minimalist African hymns for voice, kalimba and flutes. Samite talks about his return to Africa after ten years of exile and the music it spawned.
