THE COMING OF THE iCHANT

The Chant phenomenon has reached massive levels. What started out as a couple of Hare Krishnas dancing on an city corner banging tambourines has now turned into a global phenomenon where pop singers and classical divas are intoning the sound of OM. Now a new company has arisen called iChant. Their idea is to install chants on iPods. We talked to the founder of iChant and some of the musicians he's gathered together.

A LIVING ROOM CONCERT WITH GOODING
A road warrior rocker takes an ambient detour

He just uses his last name, Gooding, and you can often find the Kansas-raised rocker fronting a power trio. But he also composes instrumental music with a more cinematic design, centered on his guitar playing, both acoustic and electric. Gooding plays live in his Los Angeles living room with keyboardist Jason "3AM" Rubenstein.

AN INTERVIEW WITH SHULMAN: CHILLED AMBIENCES IN A HOT ZONE
Israeli electronic musicians tune in altered states

Shulman is the name used by Yaniv Shulman and Omri Haffatz, two Israeli electronic musicians who have created a sound they call Psybient. Mixing psychedelics, electronic and ambient music with a dash of world fusion, they orchestrate down-tempo albums of cinematic design like their latest, Endless Rhythms of the Beatless Heart. From Israel, they plug in and talk on Echoes.
