Zero One is the recording persona of Kevin Dooley, a reclusive electronic musician spinning out ambient designs from an anonymous loft above a car stereo and alarm installation company in the San Bruno, California. His recent album, PROTOTYPE 2 (Waveform), is a hypnotic and subtly humorous foray into Kevin's mindstate over the last few years. We take a seat in his Zero One Earth Headquarters and lift off.

Tuesday 05/08/01
We're used to hearing female singers like Lisa Gerrard, Vas's Azam Ali and Ekova's Diedre Dubois intoning lyrics in languages of the imagination. German-born musician Thomas Barquee is one of the few male singers working in this domain. On his album TEMPLE he creates imaginary meditations surrounding his voice with synthesizer orchestrations. Thomas Barquee talks about his hidden dialect on Echoes.

Wednesday 05/09/01
Robert Rich is one of the most sensitive composers on the techno-tribal landscape, but when he's not creating sensual melodies and rhythms, he makes a music designed to inhabit your dreams. In the early 1980s he gave all night sleep concerts and every so often he goes out on the road encouraging audiences to tuck themselves in and drift away. He's just put out a definitive recording of the sleep concert experience called SOMNIUM (Hypnos). It's a seven hour non-stop soundscape. We revisit a 1996 feature with Robert Rich where he woke up to talk about his sleep concerts.

Friday 05/11/01
Carl Weingarten is an exploratory guitarist who has worked at the outer edges of progressive music for the last 20 years. Lately he's been taking the acoustic dobro and extending it's sound into
evocative worlds, fusing it with electric treatments and global instruments. On his latest CD, BLUE FAITH (Multiphase Records) Carl merges his dobro with Japanese erhu and Pakistani singers, as well as electric guitar, bass and flute. It's the music of a global cinema running in Weingarten's head. In Oakland, he reveals some of his screenplays on Echoes.
