FEATURES FOR THE WEEK

Monday 06/10/02
AN ECHOES RAGA
It's been a long time since Indian music reached it's peak in the 1960s with recordings by sitarist Ravi Shankar, and raga rock from the Beatles. But Indian music is once again seeping into our consciousness. Releases in recent months include the modern vedic chants of Rasa, the east west fusion of Ancient Future and DJ re-mixes by DJ Cheb i Sabbah. In this hour of Echoes, we orchestrate an Echoes Raga of these new Indian sounds.

Wednesday 06/12/02
A LIVING ROOM CONCERT WITH YO-YO MA AND THE SILK ROAD ENSEMBLE
Acclaimed cellist Yo-Yo Ma plays live in the Echoes living room with his international Silk Road Ensemble. Drawing musicians and composers from Iran, China, Mongolia and points beyond, Yo-Yo Ma has created a global chamber orchestra, re-inventing compositions from the Renaissance and creating new works for the 21st century. Ma gathers his 10 piece ensemble in the Echoes living room, with neys, pipas, erhus, frame drums and violin surrounding his cello. They perform music from their album, SILK ROAD JOURNEYS and several new works.

Thursday 06/13/02
SUZANNE CIANI-MUSIC FROM THE GROTTO
Keyboardist Suzanne Ciani is still well-known for her commercial work in the 1970s and 80s, including the sound of a can of coke being opened, the GE dishwasher beep and the music you hear whenever you get AT&T on the phone. She was also a pioneer of contemporary electronic music, releasing her first album, SEVEN WAVES, on the avant-garde Finnadar label in 1984. Since then, Ciani has left her avant-garde roots, including studies with Donald Buchla, far behind. She makes a romantic music now and is more likely to sit behind her piano keyboard than her computer keyboard. In her coastal Marin County home, Ciani talks about the pastoral influences on her music and takes us into her grotto.

Friday 06/14/02
SOLAS: CELTIC CROSSROADS
Solas talks about Celtic music at a crossroad. Solas is the Celtic music ensemble headed up by multi-instrumentalist Seamus Egan. Best known for writing the music for Sarah McLachlan's hit, "I Will Remember You," Egan's Solas has been pushing the boundaries of Celtic music from the inside out. Their latest CD, THE EDGE OF SILENCE (Shanachie) is produced by Neil Dorfsman, best know for his work with Dire Straits, Sting and Paul McCartney. He brings a more electronica sound to Solas as they play original instrumentals and covers of tunes by Jesse Colin Young, Tom Waits and Bob Dylan. Solas talks about tweaking their Celtic heritage.
