INTERVIEWS AND CONCERTS FOR THE WEEK

Monday 06/09
AN INTERVIEW WITH JAMSHIED SHARIFI
Persian moods and vocal ecstacy

Jamshied Sharifi merges vocal traditions from around the world with lush, pan-global instrumentation centered on Persian grooves and his breath-driven synthesizer on his album "One." It's a follow-up to his 1997 A prayer for the Soul of Layla and continues his themes exploring world turmoil through global fusion. We talk with Jamshied Sharifi and some of the musicians from his album One, on Echoes.

A LIVING ROOM CONCERT WITH RUDY PERRONE
Live ruminations from a post-Windham Hill finger-style player

Rudy Perrone is a guitarist from Long Island who has played progressive rock with Cathedral and explored solo music as an acoustic player. On his CD, The Language of Spirits, he unfolds delicate solo pieces and elaborately arranged ensemble works. We get the solo side in this intimate performance from a guitarist as influenced by Steve Hackett “as” Will Ackerman.

AN INTERVIEW WITH THE ORB
We re-enter the Ultraworld of ambient house pioneers

It's been 17 years since The Orb unleashed Little Fluffy Clouds on the world and opened the door for groups like the Future Sound of London, Loop Guru and DJ Spooky. Original Orb members Alex Paterson and Youth get back together on a new CD of hallucinogenic grooves and surreal landscapes called The Dream. The Orb talks about their sample and slice journey.

Thursday 06/12
AN INTERVIEW WITH NIK BÄRTSCH'S RONIN
Cerebral jazz in minimalist patterns

There's a unique brand of chamber jazz these days heard from artists like E.S.T. and The Bad Plus. Nik Bärtsch's Ronin brings a Zen balance to elliptical orbits tied to minimalist designs in a heady, but inviting sound that's jazz by reference, but not by definition. We talk to Nik Bärtsch about 36 hour concerts and Zen-funk.
