FEATURES FOR THE WEEK

Monday 07/15/02
TONY MCMANUS: SCOTTISH MOORS & CEOL MORE
Tony McManus is a virtuoso finger style guitarist from Scotland who has three CDs, including his latest, CEOL MORE (Compass). A self-taught musician, McManus didn't look to Mel Bay's Modern Guitar Method. Instead, he taught himself Scottish bagpipe tunes and transposed them to his six string. Tony McManus talks about his guitar journey.

Tuesday 07/16/02
ECHOES ROCKS
Once again, Echoes kicks out the jams, but in an Echoes kind of way. We'll be hearing an ambient vocal track from former Roxy Music frontman, Bryan Ferry and an ambient soundtrack from Peter Gabriel. The music of Joni Mitchell will be heard on solo piano and the music of Tool played by a string quartet. Craig Armstrong transforms King Crimson into an ambient orchestration and punk guitarist Tom Verlaine plays with Kronos Quartet. It's a different kind of rock, on Echoes.

Thursday 07/18/02
A LIVINGROOM CONCERT WITH PIERRE BENSUSAN
Pierre Bensusan is an influential guitarist who can list George Winston and Will Ackerman among his many admirers. Traveling from France, Pierre enters the Echoes living room and cranks up his acoustic guitar for a half hour of intricate finger-picking and melodies that draw from Celtic, Moorish and eastern influences. He plays music from his latest CD, INTUITE, including a tribute to the late Michael Hedges.

Friday 07/19/02
DANNY HEINES: TUVAN TONES & TWO-HANDED TUNES
Danny Heines is a guitar wizard who uses the two-handed tapping techniques pioneered by Stanley Jordan and the late Michael Hedges. On his new CD, WHAT WORLDS THEY BRING (Vadadisc), Heines adapts Eastern European folk songs to his own atmospheric designs. A student of Tuvan throat singing, Heines merges sounds from Tuva to Kazakhstan with his own guitar techniques. He's joined on the album by Kazak singer Irina Mikhailova, vocalist Tina Malia and bassist Michael Manring. In his San Francisco home, Danny Heines talks about music between tones and between worlds.
