ECHOES PLAYLIST

For the Week of July 12, 1999

The following playlist is for one (1) week of ECHOES programming (5 days, 2 hours per day). Your local station may run only certain segments or one day of programming from this week's list especially if you hear Echoes on a weekend. Your station may also reverse the hours of Echoes, so that half hours 3&4 become 1&2.

We are pleased to offer many of the recordings you hear on ECHOES through our ECHODISC catalog. Following the playlist you'll find pricing of recordings from the catalog. If an album is not listed with a price that means it is not available through ECHODISC. You'll find ordering information at the end of this playlist. If you'd like to receive our free ECHODISC catalog, you can call 800-321-ECHO or e-mail us at: echoes@echoes.org. If you want a catalog, be sure to give us your postal address. You can also find the catalog and Echoes information on this site.

                      Monday July 12, 1999

                 JOHN RENBOURN-LEGENDARY GUITAR

Talk to Will Ackerman, Alex De Grassi, or Pierre Bensusan and

you're likely to hear the name John Renbourn. He's a legendary

British musician who founded the folk-fusion group, Pentangle and

helped revitalize the English folk music scene in the 1960s. John

Renbourn is still at it with a recent album called "Traveler's

Prayer" (Shanachie). Renbourn stops in to tell some tales and

talk about guitar.

KIRSTEN BRATEN-BERG: FROM SENEGAL TO SETESDAL

In the Setesdal region of Norway, it seems as if everyone is a

farmer, a silversmith and a musician. Kirsten Braten-Berg, who

is all of those, is probably their most famous export. She's the

best known singer of traditional Norwegian folk music, but she's

also creating new hybrids for her traditional sound, working with

ECM bassist Arild Andersen. We visited Kirsten 3 years ago at

her farm where she was in the midst of a collaboration with

musicians from Senegal and the Ivory Coast. That collaboration

has just come out on a CD called From Senegal to Setesdal (Six

Degrees). We'll revisit Kirsten Braten-Berg.

                    Wednesday July 14, 1999

ARYEH FRANKFURTER-HARP SONGS FROM THE MIDNIGHT SUN

Aryeh Frankfurter (that's his real name) is a multi-

instrumentalist who might be busking on Celtic harp in San

Francisco's Ghiradelli Square one day and wailing on electric

violin with the rock group Azigza the next. On his album, "Harp

Songs of the Midnight Sun" (Lionharp Music), Aryeh takes the

Celtic harp to Scandinavia, playing traditional melodies from

Sweden, Norway and Denmark. Aryeh talks about this unusual

source of Celtic harp music.

                    Thursday, July 15, 1999

               JON HASSELL'S RETURN TO SIMPLICITY

Jon Hassell single-handedly created the techno tribal sound

explored by everyone from Peter Gabriel to Steve Roach. In the

past his music has been full of electronic processes and a

collage like mosaic of electronic samples, creating what Hassell

dubbed "Fourth World Music." On his latest CD, Fascinoma

(Waterlily Acoustics), Hassell strips away the electronics for

some organic improvisations with Ry Cooder, Jacky Terrasson and

Indian flutist Ronu Majumdar. Jon Hassell talks about his new

change of direction and reveals the secrets of his breathy, note

bending trumpet sound.

                      Friday July 16, 1999

                     AFRO CELT SOUND SYSTEM

What happens when Techno, Celtic and African music converge-- a

new, soulful and propulsive sound, put forth by Afro Celt Sound

System. With African grooves that morph into electronic rhythms,

singers from Ireland and Africa, Uilleann pipes and African

koras, Afro Celt makes a joyful and sensual sound on their second

album, Volume Two: Release (Realworld). We talk with Irish sean

nos singer Iarla O'Lionard, whistle player James McNally and

Sound System savant Simon Emmerson.
