FEATURES FOR THE WEEK

Monday 08/26/02
A LIVING ROOM CONCERT WITH RICHARD SEARLES
In his living room north of Los Angeles, guitarist Richard Searles plays live. Richard Searles has been mixing his classical guitar technique with Renaissance themes and fantasy images since the mid-1980s. His latest album, THE GREEN MAN (Earthquest) is a lush, chamber music work of original compositions and classical and Celtic themes. Playing with Ronald Wagner on tabla and Patricia Mabee on harpsichord, Richard Searles weaves the fanciful melodies of his music live on Echoes.

Wednesday 08/28/02
A LIVING ROOM CONCERT WITH LUMIN
In Oakland Hills in northern California, we enter the living room of Jeffrey Stott and get transported into another world where Bulgarian chants, middle eastern strings and global percussive grooves converge. Jeffrey's group is Lumin. Oud and yali-tambor player Jeffrey Stott, computer programmer Michael Emenau and singer Irina Mikhailova are joined by violin, doudouk and percussion players, who groove into the rhythms and ecstatic melodies of their new CD, HADRA (Lumin Music).

Thursday 08/29/02
DJ CHEB I SABBAH'S MONDO INDIA 2002
In his San Francisco home, DJ Cheb i Sabbah lights the incense of an east west fusion. Born in Algeria and raised on the French discotheque scene in the mid-1960s, Sabbah now spins music around the world. On his own albums, he brings together virtuosos of Indian music and then supercharges their performances in subtle re-mixes. Sabbah takes us from 60s Parisian discotheques where he learned English from "Hold On, I'm Coming" to his current global grooves.

Friday 08/30/02
PHILIP AABERG'S MONTANA MEMORIES
Philip Aaberg has lived in San Francisco for the better part of three decades, but he was born and raised in Montana and that's the landscape that shapes his music. A pianist who elicits accolades from George Winston, Will Ackerman and Samite, Aaberg came to renown in the mid-1980s at the height of Windham Hill Records and made several albums for the label, including his critically acclaimed debut, HIGH PLAINS. Philip Aaberg looks back on a career that includes hit records with Elvin Bishop ("Fooled Around and Fell in Love") and Henry Gross ("Shannon")and his own music, in which he evokes the endless horizons and small pleasures of the plains states with his melodically arresting solo piano compositions. His 2001 album, LIVE FROM MONTANA (Sweetgrass Music) was nominated for a Grammy Award.
