Echoes Playlist 10/30/00 - 11/3/00

Following is a listing of the musical selections airing on Echoes for October 30-November 3, 2000.  The dates on the playlists are the dates the programs are distributed to stations.  Please check the program ID number to verify the program if your station broadcasts the program on a different day than it is distributed.

In order to offer better prices, a wider selection, and such helpful tools as on-line sound clips, we have changed our catalog so that you can now easily purchase CDs from amazon.com. At the end of each entry in the playlist is a "buy" button which will link you to that item in Amazon.com's catalog. They stock almost all of the CDs you hear on Echoes, but if there is no "buy" button, the item is not carried by Amazon at this time. Echoes recieves a portion of each sale if you click through from this site, so please remember to enter amazon.com by linking from Echoes. We rely on your purchases to help us to continue to produce Echoes for Public Radio and the internet.

FEATURES FOR THE WEEK

SORMA-COLLECTIVE CONSCIOUSNESS
Sorma is a Japanese collective that includes members of Jalan
Jalan and has that same sense of Eastern atmosphere, but their
music here is much more dynamic.  Thundering drums, chanting
vocals and electronic atmospheres's mix in with traditional
Japanese sounds in their highly imagistic album, MIRAGE OF THE
EAST (Pacific Moon).  We talk with Sorma #1, Yoichi Shimada, about
their eastern fusion.

Tuesday October 31, 2000
RICHARD LEO JOHNSON - WHIPLASH IMPRESSIONISM
Richard Leo Johnson turned a few heads, and knocked a few others off with
his album, FINGERTIP SHIP, early last year.  Now he's returned with a
follow-up album that continues his quirky relationship with the acoustic
guitar.  Language is full of twisted impressionism and odd angels, as
Johnson orchestrates a finger ballet on his double-necked acoustic 6 and 12
String Guitar.  He's still playing fast, but he slows down long enough to
talk about his new journey into the fretboard and beyond.

OHM: PIONEERS OF THE OSCILLATION ZONE
Virtually every music you hear today is the result of electronic music,
whether it's a symphony performance with dozens of edits or the latest
space music opus, Britney Spears or Karlheinz Stockhausen.  A new
collection called OHM: THE EARLY GURUS OF ELECTRONIC MUSIC (Ellipsis Arts) explore some of the early pioneers of this sound, including musicians who made
their own instruments and the first turntable scratchers from the 1940s.
We'll talk to OHM compiler Jason Gross and hear comments from several
pioneers, including John Cage and Brian Eno.
