To subscribe to the weekly Echoes podcast, paste this link:

http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPodcast?id=77320816

into the space where your podcast aggregator prompts you to "subscribe to podcast". (In iTunes this is under the "advanced" menu, just paste the link above into the box when it prompts you for the URL. Other podcast readers work similarly.)

What is Podcasting?
It's kind of like Echoes emailing you an interview feature to listen to at your leisure. You subscribe to our "RSS feed" and every week a new feature will automatically download to your computer and appear in the free iTunes program, ready for listening.

It works with both PC and Mac, and you don't need an iPod to use it. You can move the soundfile to any portable mp3 player, or just listen to it on your computer. You don't even have to use iTunes on your computer, although that program makes it easier for you to find and play podcasts once they have downloaded to your computer.

What you need:
A program to download the podcast
these listed here seem to work well for us, but there are many free or inexpensive programs that you can try. The latest versions of iTunes (4.9 or newer) can subscribe to podcasts directly from within the iTunes music store, even though there is currently no charge to subscribe to podcasts. This eliminates the need for applications such as iPodder, so it could be worth upgrading (free) to the latest update of iTunes, for a very easy, streamlined process.

If you don't already have it, you probably want iTunes, it can be downloaded for free at http://www.apple.com/itunes/

If you'd like to use another program to subscribe to podcasts, these are popular:

ipodder: http://ipodder.sourceforge.net/index.php
nimiq: (pc only) http://www.nimiq.nl/
playpod: (mac only) http://www.iggsoftware.com/playpod/

More info on podcasting and podcasting programs at ipodder.org

After you install iPodder or one of the other programs, all you need to do is copy this link:

http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPodcast?id=77320816

please note: this link is new as of August 19, 2011. Please delete the earlier link for the Echoes podcast, and then re-subscribe, using the link above. Podcasts will not be updated at the old address. This new location allows us to provide more feature-rich podcasts and to integrate with iTunes more effectively.

This will add Echoes to your podcast list. That's it!

You can set your podcasting program to check automatically for updates, or you can download podcasts manually if you prefer.

Right now, it's neither legal nor practical for us to provide complete Echoes programs as podcasts, so the Echoes podcasts will consist of our interview features. We'll update the material each week.
