STEVE TIBBETTS & CHOYING DROLMA: TRANS-AMBIENT TIBET

Several years ago, Minneapolis-based guitar iconoclast Steve Tibbetts released a CD with a Tibetan nun named Choying Drolma. On CHO, he set her ancient Tibetan chants and hymns to his ambient sound designs. Bridging time and distance, Drolma and Tibbetts return with a new CD called SELWA (Six Degrees). Tibetan for "luminous," "clear" or "awake," Selwa perfectly describes the finely honed balance between Drolma's intoxicating, often folkloric songs and Tibbetts' abstracted ambiences. We get the nun and the guitarist together to talk about a meeting of worlds.
